Many Holocaust events scheduled for this weekend

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Many Staten Island Jewish congregations will be participating in Holocaust memorial events this weekend in observance of Yom Hashoah on Sunday.

The 18th annual Yom Hashoah-Holocaust Commemoration Program for the Staten Island Jewish Community will be held Sunday at Temple Israel Reform Congregation, Randall Manor. Manny Saks is chairman of the Staten Island Holocaust Commemoration Committee.

"I am a Star: Child of the Holocaust" will be presented by author and Holocaust survivor Inge Auerbacher. Ms. Auerbacher, the subject of documentary films, will tell of her family's survival in the Terezin concentration camp in Czechoslovakia.

Participating organizations include: Temple Emanu-El; Arden Heights Boulevard Jewish Center; Congregation Aviv Hadash; Congregation B'nai Israel; Congregation B'nai Jeshurun; Congregation Ohel Abraham; Congregation Ahavath Israel; Joan and Alan Bernikow JCC; Temple Israel Reform Congregation, and Jewish War Veterans Post No. 80.

Highlights of the program include a procession of 12 candles representing the 12 million, half of them Jews, who perished; the passing from the older to younger generation of two Torahs rescued from the Nazis and currently preserved at B'nai Israel and Temple Israel, and readings of Psalms, El Maleh Rachamim and the names of concentration camps. Temple Israel Reform Choir will perform and the Jewish War Veterans will troop the colors. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the free program will begin at 7 p.m.

Temple Israel will hold its own 22nd annual Yom Hashoah observance with the Philharmonic Winds tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. Featured will be a remembrance of the lost town of Nachod, the home of the Temple's Holocaust Torah Scroll. Shabbat service will be at 8 o'clock tonight. Tomorrow, 10 a.m. Torah study will be followed by Shabbat morning service at 11 a.m. at Temple Israel at 315 Forest Ave.
YOUNG ISRAEL EVENT
Dr. Ann Kirschner, dean of the Macaulay Honors College of CUNY and the author of "Salas Gift: My Mother's Holocaust Story," will speak at the Young Israel of Staten Island Holocaust program on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

The program will feature poetry readings by the Yeshiva students, the YISI men's chorus and a candlelighting ceremony. Young Israel is at 835 Forest Hill Rd.
TREE DEDICATION
A Holocaust commemoration day with a tree and stone dedication will be held Sunday at the Arden Heights Boulevard Jewish Center.

Sponsored by the Garden Club, the center will dedicate a new dwarf weeping cherry tree that has been planted in front of the synagogue, as well as a memorial stone in memory of the 6 million Jews who perished in the Holocaust. The Sunday School will participate in the 11 a.m. ceremony at the center at 1766 Arthur Kill Rd.
MEMORIAL TONIGHT
Congregation Ahavath Israel will hold a Holocaust memorial tonight with special poems, music and stories directed by congregants Erwin Meller and Ben Wayne and services conducted by spiritual leader Joel Russo in Tottenville.

The 7 p.m. event will feature flute virtuoso Linda Keltz performing music of the Holocaust, as well as Holocaust poems recited by congregants. Wayne, a Holocaust survivor, will speak. Oneg will follow. The synagogue is located at 7630 Amboy Rd.

4/29/2011 - JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. -- For one week each spring, we as Americans formally pause to remember all those who perished more than sixty years ago in the Holocaust. This annual commemoration was established by the United States Congress in 1979 and is known as the Days of Remembrance. The observance falls each year around Yom Hashoah, the 27th day of the month of Nisan in the Jewish calendar.

In Hebrew, Yom Hashoah literally means the Day of (remembrance of) the Holocaust. This year Yom Hashoah is May 1, and the Days of Remembrance are observed this year from May 1 through 8. In Israel, since the early 1960s a siren sounds at 11 a.m. on Yom Hashoah to signal two minutes of silent devotion. Throughout the world, many Jews will observe Yom Hashoah in synagogues or in the broader Jewish community.

But Yom Hashoah and the week-long Days of Remembrance are not observances only for Jews. All humanity - Jew and Gentile - suffered because of the Holocaust and consequently all humanity ought to pause and remember those who died.

It is also fitting during the Days of Remembrance we honor those who fought against the Holocaust, those who liberated the camps, those who fought to document what had happened and those who continue today to tell the story.

The Holocaust, or Shoah, was the systematic extermination of six million Jews, approximately two-thirds of the pre-war European Jewish population. Killed along with the Jews were five million others who included political dissidents, the Roma (gypsies), handicapped and others deemed less desirable by the Nazis. Starting first as harassment, name-calling and false blame, the hatred against the Jews and others ultimately grew into an accepted practice of annihilation. Families had their possessions confiscated, were forced to live in ghettos and finally were transported to labor camps where most were abused, then killed, in short order.

In early 1945, the allies were able to push through Europe to the heart of the Nazi-held stronghold. American soldiers were soon witnesses and liberators at the gates of the wretched death camps. They were not prepared for, nor were they able to comprehend the magnitude of the evil that took place. The camps were horrific cesspools where the dignity of human life was lost. So efficient was the killing machine that most historians would later agree if the war had lasted much longer, most European Jews would have been exterminated.

The Americans who liberated the camps were deeply affected by what they saw.

Tough-as-nails Generals Patton and Eisenhower were so visibly shaken at the camps they became ill. Eisenhower said in a letter in April 1945, "I made the visit deliberately, in order to be in a position to give first-hand evidence of these things if ever, in the future, there develops a tendency to charge these allegations merely to 'propaganda'." The American liberators instinctively knew what to do. They took the time to bury and honor the dead and carefully nurse to health the gaunt living who remained.

Remembering the Holocaust is important to Americans, especially those serving in the armed forces, for several reasons. It was the American military that liberated many of the death camps, then exposed and documented what had taken place. America also welcomed many of those who survived and provided them opportunities and freedoms found nowhere else.

By annually and accurately telling the story of the Holocaust and honoring those who died, we help ensure future generations know what can happen if hatred, bigotry and indifference are left unchecked and unchallenged. Finally, listening to the stories of survivors and liberators helps reaffirm what's best in our national culture. It serves as a touchstone for counting our blessings, enduring our hardships and remembering the ultimate sacrifices of others and the role we as servicemembers play in guaranteeing the dignity and self-worth of all humanity.

Sirens will not go off in America this year on Yom Hashoah to remember those who died. But communities across this great land will still pause with their own ceremonies to honor those who died and listen to first-person accounts from survivors and liberators. If you're unable to attend a somber observance, take some personal time to reflect and remember. Read a book or see a movie about the Holocaust to sharpen your knowledge of this horrific time in world history. Think about how you can help to eliminate hatred, bigotry and indifference, especially in the society we protect and serve.

Twin Cities Jewish community to commemorate Holocaust

The 2011 Twin Cities Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) Commemoration will be held this Sunday at Bet Shalom Congregation in Minnetonka.

The commemoration will reflect the theme, “Legacy: The Writing of Survivor Stories,” which will illustrate the importance of Holocaust survivors sharing their stories with future generations.

This year, the commemoration will feature Christos Nicola, author of “The Secret of Priest’s Grotto: A Holocaust Survival Story.” The story details a team of experienced cavers that discover in the Ukraine artifacts belonging to a Jewish family that survived the Holocaust living in the caves known as Priest’s Grotto.

The commemoration will also feature “Transfer of Memory,” a photographic exhibit of Holocaust survivor portraits. The exhibit is a collaboration between the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) and local photographer, David Sherman. Israel Defense Forces soldiers and participants from Talmud Torah of Minneapolis’ Adopt-a-survivor program will also participate in the program.

The annual Yom HaShoah Commemoration remembers the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust. As is tradition at Yom HaShoah, Holocaust survivors are invited to light candles in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. Members of the Children of Holocaust Survivors Association in Minnesota (CHAIM) will assist in the lighting of candles.

For the past 31 years, the JCRC has organized and hosted the Twin Cities Yom HaShoah Commemoration. The 7 p.m. commemoration is free of charge and open to the public.

The Yom HaShoah Commemoration is co-sponsored by the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas, CHAIM, Bet Shalom Congregation, Minneapolis Jewish Federation and United Jewish Fund and Council of St. Paul.

Tomorrow is Yom HaShoah. For those who are not familiar with the phrase it simply means "day of remembrance of the Holocaust."
The day is observed as Israel's day of commemoration for the approximate 6 million Jews who perished in the Holocaust as a result of the actions carried out by Nazi Germany and its accessories. Yet it is a day that goes beyond Jews and Israel and is a reminder for all of us, all children of God, that horrible things have happened in the past and we must do whatever we can to make sure they never happen again.
As this is an article directed toward all people of faith, I would like us to set aside such a day not only to remember those who have no one left to remember them - when entire towns were destroyed - populations within various countries completely killed - it is all too easy to simply say, "Well, that wasn't my family" and go on with our lives. This is something that people of faith must never do. So spend a moment tomorrow in silent prayer and remember those who died in such a horrible way.
Then, go forth from that moment of silence to live your life in a new way, a way that will assure all peoples that such an event will never be allowed to happen again. While most of us can't control governments or armies, we actually have the very powers that would have prevented such a thing from ever happening.
Hitler could only achieve what he did when the common persons turned their faces away and were just glad it was not them. The saying by Pastor Martin Niemoller in Germany in the 1940s - "First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me."
This day should serve as a motivator to each of us to speak out when we see any injustice, to act in defense of anyone without a voice or without power, to love instead of hate, to accept instead of reject, and to stand up and be heard even when it is not popular. We, as God's People, need to be the voice of sanity and reason and not mass hysteria. We, as God's People, need to share the Good News of God's love for all people of this world, not the bad news of making any group of people less than any other. We, as God's People, need to encourage governments toward policies of justice, freedom, acceptance and equality.
This is the calling of this day of remembrance. Do it because God tells you that it is the right thing to do. Do it because our children deserve a better world in the future and a safer world for all people. Do it as someone who cares for others, especially those whom you do not know. And do it for those who hid in attics and basements, who had to wear horrible yellow stars, who lost all their possessions and could not work, died in concentration camps, in gas chambers, in mass graves and never would see their families again. Do it before you are the only ones left and there is no one left to speak for you.

Curious George, the beloved character of children's books, might seem to be an unlikely feature of an event that aims to remember 11 million people, including six million Jews, who perished during the Holocaust at the hands of Nazi Germany.
But the story of how an early manuscript of the book helped its Jewish authors escape the Nazis is one of the ways local Jewish organizations hope to make a connection with local children with regard to one of the darkest periods in human history.
"Never Again: A Walk for Respect and Understanding," a Holocaust remembrance event Sunday at the Arthur M. Glick JCC, aims to teach lessons about this difficult story to children ranging from kindergarten through 12th grade.
There will be anti-bullying messages and dramatic portrayals of death camp survivor and author Elie Wiesel and a Danish child telling the story of how his grandfather ferried fleeing Jews to safety
Also planned is a visit to the JCC Holocaust memorial, where visitors will be take part in the Jewish tradition of putting a rock on the memorial as a symbol of remembrance. It is a walk in the sense that the event will take place in various stations around the JCC's grounds.
The event, sponsored by several local Jewish organizations, precedes by a few hours the start at sundown of Yom Hashoah, the one-day international remembrance of the Holocaust.
Bringing the Holocaust home to children is a challenge, says Marcia Goldstein, director of lifelong learning for the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation, one of the sponsoring organizations. But finding ways to remember, she said, is "imperative" for those victims with no living survivors and as an antidote to future genocides.
"When you take the Holocaust and boil it down, it happened because people stopped looking at the humanity of the other person," Goldstein said. "We are trying to instill in the kids the importance of the other person and how we can make a difference in the world."

Holocaust memorial set for Sunday on Miami Beach

At 6 p.m. today, South Floridians from all walks of life will gather to remember one of the darkest times in modern history: the Holocaust. To me, the commemoration is just another way of saying, “Never again.”
The gathering will meet at the Holocaust Memorial of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation at 1933-45 Meridian Ave. on Miami Beach to observe “Yom HaShoah,” or Holocaust Remembrance Day and to demonstrate solidarity with the people of Israel, who recently have experienced a renewed campaign of terrorism, which includes bus bombings and the brutal murder of five members of a family on March 11 – including an infant – as they slept.
Many of us are aware of the 6 million Jews who died in the holocaust. But not too many know there were others who were sent to their death by the tyrant Hitler, including people with disabilities, blacks and gypsies, to name a few.
Those attending the day of remembrance will include some Holocaust survivors, their families and some school children. The annual program is a solemn commemoration of the 6 million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and pays tribute to those who survived.
Speakers will include U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and Ofer Bavly, Consul General of Israel for Florida and Puerto Rico.
The observance is presented by the Holocaust Memorial in partnership with a coalition of civic, cultural, educational and charitable organizations. In case of rain, the program will be at Temple Emanu-El, 1701 Washington Ave. in Miami Beach.

Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, is the official Israeli commemoration of the 6 million Jews murdered in Nazi Germany during World War II. Yom Hashoah 2011 takes place on May 2, and isobserved throughout the United States.
The memorial day, which is officially known as Yom Hazikaron L'shoah U'l'gevurah (Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day), is observed most emblematically with a national moment of silence. At 10 a.m., a siren is sounded for two minutes throughout Israel, and most people in the country stop what they are doing to stand at contemplative attention. People even break from driving on the highway and get out to pay their respects during the siren.
Among other aspects of the day's observance: Israel's Prime Minister and President give speeches at Yad Vashem, the national Holocaust museum in Jerusalem; Holocaust survivors and others light memorial candles; flags on public buildings are lowered; TV and radio broadcast somber programming; and venues for public entertainment are closed by law.
At Auschwitz, the infamous death camp in Germany that is now a walkable museum to the atrocities that occurred there, tens of thousands of high school students from Israel, along with Jews and non-Jews from around the world, gather as part of the "March of the Living," an event that is subsidized by the Israeli government.
Yom Hashoah is observed informally throughout the rest of the Jewish world on this day because there is no institutional or ritual observance of Holocaust remembrance. In 2003, a Conservative attempt to formalize a liturgy for the day resulted in Megillat Hashoah, The Scroll of the Holocaust, which contains six chapters in memory of the 6 million. Jewish communities may gather at synagogues to honor local survivors, screen a Holocaust film, read appropriate Pslams together or establish efforts to protect international human rights now -- but there is no universal formula for memorial. Still, one widely accepted practice is to light a yellow or white yahrtzeit (memorial) candle.
The United States has an official eight-day period of memorial, known as Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust, that begins the Sunday before Yom Hashoah. The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum is mandated by Congress to lead the national observance. The Days of Remembrance begin on May 1. (Watch below for a video of the Remembrance ceremony from 2009.)

Many observant Jews are conflicted about Yom Hashoah. While some certainly observe the day, many on the Orthodox end of the spectrum do not. Some choose to commemorate the Shoah, a Hebrew word for "calamity," on Tisha B'Av (the ninth of the Hebrew month of Av), the traditional day of mourning for the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, as well as the numerous calamities the Jewish people have endured throughout history. Others mourn the 6 million on the 10th of Tevet, the date established by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel in 1949. The conflict results from the fact that Nissan, the month of both Passover and, now, Yom Hashoah, is traditionally understood to be a time of religious and national joy. This is a point of contention in Israel between non-Haredi andHaredi Jews, the latter's blatant non-observance viewed as an act of gross disrespect to both the victims and living survivors.
Yom Hashoah cannot be observed on or around the Sabbath, which is also understood to be a time of joyousness. As a result, if the the 27th of Nissan falls on a Friday or Sunday, as it does this year, the day is pushed to a Thursday or Monday.
While Yom Hashoah, the 10th and Tevet and Tisha B'Av are specifically Jewish memorial days, the rest of the world remembers those who perished at the hands of Hitler and his forces at various times throughout the year. The United Nations established International Holocaust Remembrance Day in 2005 around the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. It is observed annually on January 27.

School Matters: Students to participate, sing for Holocaust Remembrance Day

Students from Gunn High School, Palo Alto High School, Jane Lathrop Stanford Middle School, South Peninsula Hebrew Day School and Gideon Hausner School plan to participate in the Yom HaShoah ceremony, also known as Holocaust Remembrance Day.

More than 500 people are expected at the ceremony, which will be held Congregation Beth Am, 26790 Arastradero Road, on Sunday at 5 p.m.

Yom HaShoah, the newest holiday on the Jewish calendar, is the day when the genocides of World War II are remembered.

This year's theme -- Dignity and Defiance -- will be illustrated through music, dramatic readings, first-person stories of survival and student exhibits.

Projects and reports created by Kari Nygaard's English class at JLS will be on display, along with research posters made by Hausner and SPHDS students. Paly and Gunn students will read poems and essays. Survivors of the Shoah will begin the gathering by lighting candles of remembrance as teens introduce them.

The Yiddish Community Chorus will sing a selection of songs about the subject. Daniel Wolfert, a Gunn High School student and choir member, will sing "Yisrolik," a song written in the Vilna Ghetto in 1942 about a tough young entrepreneur who remains cheerful in the face of adversity.

"Daniel is such a perfect choice to sing this song," said Karen Bergen, director of the Yiddish Choristers. "His age makes him a credible 'Yisrolik.'"

Bergen praised Wolfert's hard

work in mastering the material. "He's facing Yiddish words like 'skhoyre' and 'hefkediker,' sung quickly to quarter and eighth notes in an up-tempo song," Bergen said.

From Wednesday to May 27, a selection of projects created by Nygaard's class will be displayed near the fitness desk of the Oshman Family Community Center at 3921 Fabian Way, Palo Alto.

All ceremonies and exhibitions are free and open to the public.

Justice and Accountability in the Face of Genocide: What Have We Learned?

Congress established the Days of Remembrance as the nation’s annual commemoration of theHolocaust and created the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum as a permanent living memorial to the victims. This year's Holocaust remembrance week is May 1–8, 2011. The theme designated by the Museum for the 2011 observance is Justice and Accountability in the Face of Genocide: What Have We Learned?
In the immediate aftermath of the massive death and destruction of World War II, revenge might have satisfied the shock and anger of the moment. But many believed that justice under the rule of law rather than vengeance would better serve humanity. In support of this principle, the Museum is marking the 65th anniversary of the verdicts at the first Nuremberg trial, a watershed moment in international justice, and the 50th anniversary of the trial of Adolf Eichmann, one of the most high-profile postwar recountings of the Nazi genocide and a landmark in public awareness of the Holocaust.
The International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg in 1945 held 22 top Nazi leaders accountable for atrocities they commanded and perpetrated. Subsequent proceedings between 1946 and 1949 prosecuted another 183 persons. This total represented only a tiny fraction of those responsible for the Holocaust, but established important precedents. Who was prosecuted was more telling than how many stood trial. No one, regardless of official position, was above the law. The argument that someone had just been following orders was no longer considered a valid defense. Not only were the shooters at mass executions and the guards at gas chambers tried, but physicians and business leaders, government officials and civil servants also were required to take responsibility for their actions—for as noted historian Raul Hilberg wrote, “The annihilation of Jewry required the implementation of systematic administrative measures in successive steps.”
After Nuremberg, a new understanding of international responsibility for human rights emerged, as the world began to fully understand the events we now call the Holocaust, spurring on a process to create a new legal vehicle that criminalized attempts to destroy any entire group of people—the 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime ofGenocide.
Fifteen years after the first Nuremberg convictions, a single individual would come to personify these crimes—Adolf Eichmann. A midlevel SS officer central to the planning and implementation of the “Final Solution,” Eichmann was captured by Israeli agents while hiding in Argentina in 1960 and brought to Israel for what would become known then as the “trial of the century.”
In an event televised around the world, the Eichmann trial refocused attention on the murder of the Jews of Europe. Unlike the Nuremberg trials, which relied heavily on documentary evidence, the Eichmann trial featured eyewitness testimony by Holocaust survivors, speaking out in a way they never had before, enabling the world to put a face not only on the perpetrators, such as Eichmann, but on the millions of victims and survivors.
The Nuremberg and Eichmann trials strove for justice, but what can justice really mean in the face of a crime like genocide? While the trials were an act of public accountability owed to the victims, justice to a great extent was aspirational.
These anniversaries come at a time when some of the last living Nazis are on trial and perpetrators of recent genocides and crimes against humanity are being prosecuted. Precedents set in trials against Holocaust perpetrators have guided a new understanding of justice as a tool for seeking accountability, providing affirmation to victims, warning perpetrators, and reflecting society’s highest ideals about truth and justice. These trials are also a harsh reminder that while accountability is necessary in the aftermath of genocide, early intervention is vital to saving lives. Whether it is prevention, response, or accountability, the Holocaust teaches us that inaction can be deadly; actions, even small ones, can make all the difference for those whose lives are at risk, now and in the future.

Starting Sunday, people across the country will take time out of the coming week to remember the Holocaust. Whether it is during a special service at a synagogue or church, at an educational museum program, or in the privacy of their own homes — both those with a direct connection to Adolph Hitler’s genocide of 6 million Jews during World War II and those who only know its atrocities from stories told will reflect upon those horrific events and the lives they took as part of the National Days of Remembrance (May 1-8).
Racine’s Beth Israel Sinai congregation will mark the occasion with a Yom Hashoah (day of the destruction) Service at 1 p.m. on Sunday. All are invited to the service, which will feature a series of readings with an overall message that we must never forget, nor ever again allow such atrocities to happen, said Rabbi Martyn Adelberg of Beth Israel Sinai.
Such shared reflection is important for all of us to prevent history from repeating itself, said the Rev. William Dietzler, of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Parish, who has spoken at Beth Israel Sinai’s Yom Hashoah service in year’s past.
“We as a people have very short memories; I think it is an American syndrome,” said Dietzler. “We tend to forget crisis and disaster, and in forgetting we kind of excuse things. An event like the Holocaust, in which an entire people were singled out for mass destruction in the name of the state — that is something we dare not forget.”
Referring to the words on a statue at a concentration camp site in Germany which, when loosely translated, read “To honor the dead and to warn the living,” Dietzler said we as a society need to be reminded that we are capable of such things. “We like to think that the Holocaust is ancient history and something done at the hands of a madman, but we need to be aware that we have the capability within us to do that.”
Remembering the Holocaust annually also gives us the opportunity to be reminded that many faith traditions call for us to work for freedom, justice and peace in our world — things that seem especially important in the globally-interconnected world we live in today, said the Rev. Michael Mueller of St. Andrew Lutheran Church. “The profound depth of suffering that took place during the Holocaust, and the knowledge that something so horrible could happen again, requires all of us to stop and pay attention, so that we can learn from that experience,” said Mueller who also leads the Racine Interfaith Coalition.
It helps to keep asking questions — questions about what happened, how it happened and how it could happen again, said Jeff Collen, president of Beth Israel Sinai Congregation. Having such awareness and finding ways to use it right now, are why the Days of Remembrance are important, Collen said.
Events since the Holocaust, including the genocide in Cambodia in the 1970s and that in Rwanda in the ’90s, are proof that we need to continue to speak out against all evil, Adelberg said. “It is not a particularly Jewish thing, but Jews feel particularly strongly about it because of what we’ve been through.”
Sunday’s service at Beth Israel Sinai will not only honor the memory of the 6 million Jews who perished during the Holocaust, but all those who risked their lives on behalf of European Jews, the Rabbi said. Adelberg, who has been with Beth Israel Sinai for 10 years, also encourages people to visit one of the Holocaust museums here in the U.S. to gain a better understanding of the genocide and its affects on our world. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (www.ushmm.org), in Washington, D.C., is a living memorial to the Holocaust, designed to inspire citizens and leaders worldwide to confront hatred, promote human dignity, and prevent genocide. Located among national monuments to freedom on the National Mall, it has been visited by more than 30 million people.
Closer to home, the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center (www.ilholocaustmuseum.org) in Skokie, is within an hour’s drive of Racine. Here visitors can witness the story of the Holocaust through interactive exhibitions and more than 500 artifacts (including a German rail car), documents, photographs and video testimonies.
And what better time to go than in May, which is Jewish American Heritage Month. Throughout May, the Library of Congress, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Gallery of Art, the National Park Service and other organizations will pay tribute to the generations of Jewish Americans who have helped form the fabric of American history, culture and society. Program set Sunday in Kenosha
KENOSHA — A Holocaust Remembrance Day Program will be offered at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Kenosha Public Museum, 5500 First Ave. The community program, sponsored by the Kenosha Clergy Council and the museum, will commemorate those who suffered, those who died and those who fought. A holocaust survivor will be the program’s featured speaker. The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.
